Privacy Policy
Effective October 20, 2026
Spurgeon HQ is an app for reading and listening to the sermons of Charles H. Spurgeon. It is made by John Allen (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Spurgeon HQ app and spurgeonapp.com, why we collect it, who helps us handle it, and the choices you have.
The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work, we don’t sell your information, and the app has no advertising or analytics trackers.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address, and your name if you give it to us or your Apple or Google account shares it when you sign in. We also record how you sign in (email, Apple or Google). If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we receive a private relay address instead. Your password is handled by our account provider and stored only in encrypted form; we never see it.
Your reading and listening. So the app can keep your place and show your progress on every device, we store where you are in each sermon, how long you’ve listened, the sermons and daily readings you’ve finished, the days you’ve read or listened (for your streak), the sermons and readings you save, the ratings you give sermons, your highlights and notes, the topics you follow, and the profile picture you choose from the app’s pictures. You don’t upload photos.
Your subscription. If you subscribe to Premium, we receive your plan and whether it is active, renewing or ended, from Apple or Google through our subscription provider. Payments are handled entirely by Apple or Google; we never receive your card details.
What you type into the AI sermon finder. If you use it, what you write is sent to our AI provider so it can suggest sermons. We don’t store what you write. We keep only the time each question was asked, so we can limit how many questions are asked each day.
Emails. Our email provider records whether the emails we send you were delivered.
Technical information. Like any online service, the companies that host the app and this website process your device’s IP address and basic details of each request in order to deliver it and keep the service secure.
Signing in on the website. If you sign in on spurgeonapp.com, your browser keeps a sign-in token so you stay signed in, and the website reads and changes your account’s saved sermons and reading the same way the app does. Signing out removes the token. The website has no advertising or analytics trackers.
Kept only on your phone. Your reminder times, text and display settings, recent searches, and the sermons kept for reading offline stay on your device and are not sent to us.
How we use it
- To run the app: your account, your progress on every device, your streaks and activity, your saved items, highlights and notes.
- To provide Premium if you subscribe.
- To send account emails, such as sign-in codes and password resets, and a few welcome emails to help you get started. You can unsubscribe from welcome emails with the link in each one; account emails are still sent when you need them.
- To show the readers’ rating, which combines every reader’s ratings into an average. Your own rating is never shown to anyone else.
- To answer you when you contact us, and to keep the service secure and working.
Reading reminders are scheduled on your phone by the app itself; we don’t send them from our servers.
We don’t sell your personal information, we don’t share it for advertising, and we don’t use it to build advertising profiles.
Who helps us
We use these companies to run Spurgeon HQ. They handle information only on our behalf and for these purposes:
- Supabase: accounts, the database that stores your data, and our servers.
- RevenueCat, with Apple and Google: subscriptions and payments.
- Apple and Google: signing in, if you choose Sign in with Apple or Google.
- Resend: sending our emails.
- Anthropic: the AI sermon finder, which receives what you type into it.
- OpenAI: making the sermons’ audio from Spurgeon’s text. No information about you is sent.
- Cloudflare: hosting this website.
- Google Fonts: the fonts on this website, which your browser loads from Google.
- Microsoft: our email inbox, when you write to us.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our readers or others.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your account and everything stored with it are deleted, and you are removed from our email list. Purchase records kept by Apple, Google and our subscription provider are kept under their own policies and legal duties.
Your choices and rights
- See and correct your information: most of it is shown in the app, and you can change your email and password in the app.
- Delete your account: in the app, go to You → Settings → Account → Delete account, or see how to delete your account.
- Emails: unsubscribe from welcome emails with the link in each one.
- Notifications: turn reading reminders on or off in the app or in your phone’s settings.
Depending on where you live, including the European Union, the United Kingdom and California, you may have the right to ask for a copy of your information, to have it corrected or deleted, to receive it in a portable form, or to object to or restrict how we use it. To make a request, email us at the address below. We will answer within the time the law allows, and we won’t treat you differently for using these rights.
If you are in the EU or UK, we rely on these legal grounds: providing the service you asked for (your account and reading data, Premium), our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure, welcome emails about the app, which you can stop at any time), and our legal duties.
Children
Spurgeon HQ is not meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Where your information is processed
Our providers process information in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
Security
Information travels encrypted between the app and our servers, and access rules mean only you can read your account’s data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If the changes are significant, we will also tell you in the app or by email.
